Why Knee Pain Is Increasing in Young Patients?

Knee pain is no longer only an old-age problem. Many young adults (20–40 years) now complain of knee pain due to lifestyle and activity changes.

1️⃣ Lack of Exercise & Weak Muscles

Long hours of sitting weaken the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, which support the knee joint. Weak muscles increase stress on the knee.

2️⃣ Obesity / Weight Gain

Extra body weight puts 3–4 times more pressure on the knee joint during walking or climbing stairs.

3️⃣ Excessive Gym or Sports Injuries

Incorrect gym techniques, sudden heavy workouts, or sports injuries can cause conditions like Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome, ligament strain, or cartilage damage.

4️⃣ Prolonged Sitting (Office / Mobile Use)

Sitting for long periods with bent knees (desk jobs, driving, gaming) increases pressure on the kneecap.

5️⃣ Vitamin Deficiencies

Low Vitamin D and calcium levels can lead to bone and muscle pain.

6️⃣ Poor Posture & Squatting

Frequent deep squatting, cross-leg sitting, or improper posture can strain the knee joint.

7️⃣ Overuse Injuries

Running on hard surfaces, excessive stair climbing, or sudden increase in activity can cause Patellar Tendinitis.

Prevention Tips

  • Maintain healthy body weight

  • Do regular quadriceps strengthening exercises

  • Avoid prolonged sitting

  • Warm-up before sports or gym

  • Maintain adequate Vitamin D

Important: Persistent knee pain in young patients may indicate ligament injury, cartilage damage, or early arthritis and should be evaluated by an orthopedic specialist.
