When To Worry About Backpain

Updated: Apr 22

Back pain is extremely common—and most cases are not serious. But some situations need attention sooner rather than later.

Red flags

Seek medical help urgently If back pain is associated with any of these, don’t ignore it:

Loss of bladder or bowel control (possible Cauda Equina Syndrome)

Severe weakness, numbness, or tingling in both legs

History of trauma (fall, accident)

Fever with back pain (possible infection)

Unexplained weight loss (possible tumor or serious illness)

Severe night pain that doesn’t improve with rest

See a doctor soon

Pain lasting more than 4–6 weeks

Pain radiating down the leg (suggestive of Sciatica)

Increasing severity despite rest/medications

Stiffness in the morning improving with activity (possible Ankylosing Spondylitis)

Simple advice

Stay active (bed rest only 1–2 days max)

Use hot fomentation

Start core strengthening early

Avoid prolonged sitting
