Exercise vs Rest in Joints Pain

When it comes to Joint pain, the answer isn’t “exercise or rest”—it’s the right balance of both. Overdoing either can worsen symptoms.

🏃‍♂️ Exercise:

Exercise is usually beneficial for most joint conditions, including Osteoarthritis.

✅ Benefits:

Strengthens muscles → better joint support

Improves flexibility & range of motion

Reduces stiffness

Helps with weight control (less joint load)

Best types:

Low-impact: walking, cycling, swimming

Strength training (light resistance)

Stretching / yoga

Avoid:

High-impact (jumping, running on hard surfaces if painful)

Exercising through sharp pain

Rest:

Rest is helpful during acute flare-ups or injuries.

✅ When to rest:

Sudden swelling or inflammation

Severe pain after activity

Suspected ligament or muscle injury

Red Flags (Seek medical advice):

Persistent swelling

Night pain

Joint instability

Pain lasting >2–3 weeks
