Ankle pain is very common and can range from mild strain to serious injury. Let me break it down simply
Common causes of ankle pain
Most ankle pain happens due to:
Injuries
Ankle sprain (most common)
Ligament tear
Fracture
Tendon injury (especially Achilles tendon)
Twisting or rolling your ankle is the usual cause
Overuse / strain
Running or excessive walking
Sports injuries
Tendinitis (Achilles or peroneal)

Joint problems
Arthritis (wear & tear)
Gout (sudden severe pain + swelling)
Flat foot or high arch issues
Other causes
Infection (rare but serious)
Poor footwear
Symptoms you may notice
Pain while walking or standing
Swelling
Stiffness
Difficulty bearing weight
Redness or warmth
What you can do (initial treatment)
Follow RICE method:
Rest – avoid weight
Ice – 15 min, 2–3 times/day
Compression – elastic bandage
Elevation – keep foot raised
This is first-line treatment in most cases
You can also take:
Use ankle support/brace
When to see a doctor (important)
Severe pain after injury
Unable to walk
Persistent pain > 3–5 days
Significant swelling or deformity
